Vendor-Vetting Guide · 90 Seconds

If your last AI setter didn't work, the AI wasn't the problem.

Most service-business owners we talk to have already paid an AI chatbot company, a marketing agency, or an offshore SDR firm — and ended up with nothing to show for it. The pattern is so consistent we started writing it down.

The 7 things below are how those vendors fail. Use them to vet anyone selling you an AI SMS or appointment-setting service — including us. If a vendor flinches on any of these questions, you have your answer.

1

They didn't qualify your list for TCPA opt-in.

What it cost you

$500–$1,500 per text in TCPA settlement exposure. One bad list and your "campaign" turns into a class-action — and your business carries the liability, not the vendor.

The 90-second vet

Walk me through exactly how you verify TCPA-eligible consent on a list before you send the first message.

How ScaleLayer handles it

Hard list-qualifier on every prospect, pre-sale. "How were these leads originally collected?" is a non-negotiable filter — we will not run a pilot on a list that fails it. Protecting you from carrier and TCPA exposure is more important than booking a project.

2

They used a shared sender ID instead of registering your brand.

What it cost you

When a shared number gets flagged (and it always does), every message from it fails — including yours. Your business gets associated with whatever spam was on that ID, and your domain reputation goes down with it.

The 90-second vet

Will I have my own A2P 10DLC brand registered with the carriers, or am I sending from a shared sender pool?

How ScaleLayer handles it

Per-client A2P 10DLC brand registration, every time. Your business, your sender ID, your reputation. We don't run shared pools — ever. It takes a few extra days to get approved, but it's the difference between a system that scales and a system that gets shut down.

3

Their "AI" was a template with your business name swapped in.

What it cost you

Generic copy reads like spam, gets ignored, and converts at near-zero. Worse: when the template fails, the vendor blames "AI is hard" — but they never tuned anything to your business in the first place.

The 90-second vet

Show me a script you wrote for a client in MY exact vertical — not a similar one. I want to see the prompt, the qualifying logic, and how it handles objections.

How ScaleLayer handles it

Per-vertical prompt design, no transferred templates. A roofing prompt doesn't become a solar prompt by changing five words — the objections are different, the booking flow is different, the qualifying questions are different. We rebuild for each vertical and tune it on real conversations during the free pilot.

4

They charged you whether or not it worked.

What it cost you

Burning $5K–$30K on a 'campaign' that produced nothing while the vendor pocketed the retainer. Performance was their problem on the proposal call and your problem the moment you signed.

The 90-second vet

Do I pay if no meetings get booked? What happens if your numbers miss?

How ScaleLayer handles it

Pay-per-meeting only — and cold prospects start with a free pilot (200 of your oldest leads, capped at 10 booked appointments, $0). If the pilot doesn't deliver, you don't pay and you don't sign anything. We absorb the cost. Performance alignment isn't a marketing line; it's the entire business model.

5

There was no real handoff — booked leads dropped into a black hole.

What it cost you

Appointments your team never sees, missed handoffs, customers texting back asking where you are. The vendor counts the "booking"; you eat the brand damage.

The 90-second vet

Walk me through what happens the second a lead says yes — who gets notified, where does the appointment land, what does my team see, and what's the SLA on a no-show recovery?

How ScaleLayer handles it

Native calendar integration (Google, Outlook, or your CRM via webhook). Instant notification to the right person on your team — SMS, email, or live transfer where applicable. Every booking has full conversation context attached, so your closer walks in already knowing what was said.

6

They ignored opt-outs — and almost got you sued.

What it cost you

TCPA exposure, carrier-level shutdowns, and a brand that gets blacklisted across all major carriers. Once your number is flagged, even your transactional messaging stops landing — and there's no easy way back.

The 90-second vet

What happens the second a lead replies STOP, DELETE, or UNSUBSCRIBE — and how can I audit that you're honoring it?

How ScaleLayer handles it

Every opt-out is honored instantly with zero follow-up, zero exception. Every action is audit-logged and exportable on request. We honor STOP, DELETE, UNSUBSCRIBE, and creative variations of the same intent — because the only acceptable opt-out failure rate is zero.

7

They sold you "AI" — but it was offshore SDRs in a spreadsheet.

What it cost you

Inconsistent outreach, time-zone delays, broken English, off-brand messaging, and a sales motion that doesn't match your business. You paid AI prices for human labor with all of human labor's downsides.

The 90-second vet

Can I see a raw conversation log — start to finish — from a current client? Not a curated screenshot, the actual log.

How ScaleLayer handles it

Real conversational AI (live language model with retrieval over your business context), not a managed VA team behind a chatbot UI. Conversation logs are exportable on request, including timestamp data. If anyone tells you "we use AI" but won't show you raw logs, you already have your answer.

The Honest Test

You should still verify us. That's the point.

The free pilot is the only honest test. We work 200 of your oldest leads — capped at 10 booked appointments — at no cost. If we fail any of the 7 above, you'll see it before you spend a dollar.

If we deliver, you stay. If we don't, you don't. That's the deal.
